Podcasters have been struggling with labeling their Facebook podcast page, as a podcast page. There were a few options for labeling pages related to audio such as radio station, but a podcast isn’t a radio station. Podcasters require (or desire) a specific label for our creations of audible content.
Facebook had to get with the podcast program or risk falling behind as Myspace had done many years ago.
In December 2014, Facebook publicly unveiled its podcast category page—and nobody noticed. There were literally crickets chirping in the podcast category land.
When beginning this piece there was a question being dangled above my head like a carrot, as though I were somehow related to a hungry rabbit, and that question was; “Is this new podcast category for pages going to be valuable in terms of either SEO value or driving my content to more listening ears?”
If you’re here reading this, then I’m going to assume that you too are interested in creating a podcast page, and you may also be wondering if it will increase awareness of your audible content. First let’s get to the heart of the matter, creating or adjusting your page to a podcast page.
Creating a Facebook Podcast Page
As of the moment there is no option to choose the podcast category until you have already created your page. This may change in the future but for now, please follow along and we’ll have you set up with your newly labeled Podcast Category on Facebook.
This post is being updated as of 10.15.2015.
Facebook Podcast Page
[…] Facebook Category for Podcasting (Details here) […]
I would like to hear from fellow podcasters, concerning whether you would adopt the newly introduced podcast category on your podcast fan pages; why or why not?
It’s hard to tell for sure if changing over to the podcast category will add any benefits over another Facebook category, and @Cliff Ravenscraft mentioned if your podcast is a tool for your business then it makes more sense to have your fan page listed as a business, service or product.
Thanks for the info. Just updated my page. The main reason I did it is because one day Facebook will likely do something with podcasts, and I want my page to be included in what they do with them. I could be naive, but I can totally see FB doing something with podcasts someday. Who knows!
Here’s my guess – Facebook knows that podcasters make little, if any, money. But at the same time, FB is trying to wring more and more fees from business pages in order to have their advertising posts seen by their followers. Since we don’t really make much, few podcasters will be willing to pay to boost the visibility for each episode. By labeling our category as “Podcast”, FB can filter the podcast pages to let more of the posts reach their audience.
That is, until FB figures out a business model that would actually get us to use a crowbar on our wallet and give them money. In the meantime, it is in FB’s interest to let podcasters’ posts reach a higher audience as it provides content and FB can show potential advertisers that pages still have an effective reach.
Or I could be totally wrong and some programmer at FB had an extra 10 minutes at the end of the work day and (s)he needed something to fill the time.
I’m about to create a podcast facebook page and I don’t see the option for podcast. Have they removed the category or am I looking in the wrong place?
Hi KJ!
You will need to create the page first using another option.
Then once you’ve created the page you can go back in and change it to podcast.
I’m not sure why Facebook doesn’t include that as a primary option upon page creation.
